Topics Smart City World

Smart City World Congress (SCEWC) is the world’s largest event addressing the topics of cities and urban innovation. It includes numerous conferences, panel discussions, workshops and presentations on the latest innovations. The congress covers key topics such as sustainable transport, safety management, smart urban resource management, digitisation of public services and social inclusion.

Conclusions of Smart City World participants

We present a selection of the conclusions presented by congress participants and the observations made following the meetings and discussions at the exhibition stands:

  1. the use of urban data in strategic decision-making and operational management of urban space is constantly growing in importance;
  2. cities are taking stock of their space, using, among other things, orthophotos, video recording, 3D laser scanning, etc;
  3. a new trend is to build digital twins of both individual objects and entire cities, which can be used for visualisation, monitoring or forecasting;
  4. safety functions are increasingly being integrated into devices and systems whose primary use is not directly related to the need for safety, e.g. streetlights, bus stops, urban furniture, etc;
  5. urban space management should, increasingly, take into account the use of Internet of Things (IoT) systems, which have the advantages of ease of installation, independence from power supply systems, independence from telecommunications services, resilience and ease of replication;
  6. more and more multi-technology solutions are available on the market for counting people, monitoring crowd flows and predicting dangerous situations;
  7. providers of video analytics solutions are proposing new applications for this technology, including detection of incidents at recreational areas, beaches and swimming baths;
  8. more and more solutions are available to ensure situational awareness and information flow between units responsible for maintaining continuity of public services, and there is a growing need for 24/7 operational command control units;
  9. a large number of systems and devices are available on the market to monitor the environment, in particular water and air quality, and meteorological protection systems;
  10. solutions for transport traffic management, urban mobility and road safety remain popular;
  11. the need for tools to provide rapid information to citizens via online channels and in public spaces (e.g. screens, boards, loudspeakers) is emphasised;
  12. after a period of development of domain-specific systems, comes the time of multifunctional platforms or integration of domain-specific systems into integrating platforms;
  13. there is an increase in the number of applications for drones, particularly in the fields of measurement, monitoring and inspection;
  14. there is a growing awareness among manufacturers of the need to protect privacy, secure personal data, comply with codes of ethics.

We believe that the above summary can be helpful to Polish local governments in implementing current and designing future public policies.
